Setting up a new fibre connection
If you're setting up a new fibre connection or configuring a new router, this guide will help you get connected with minimal effort.
Before you begin
Get your fibre user datasheet
A datasheet should have been included with your router, but if you don't have your with you. You can download it here.
Check the ONT
"ONT" stands for "Optical Network Terminal". This is a device installed inside your home or office by the fibre network's contractors. It will have a thin fibre cable with a green connector plugged into one port. It will also have an ethernet/network port, and the contractors might already have plugged in an ethernet/network cable. Your router should be connected to the ONT with an ethernet cable (a cable is provided with the router), and both the router and ONT should be plugged in to mains power and switched on.
Connect to the router
Connect your PC, laptop, phone, or other suitable device to the router. You can do use an ethernet cable, or connect to WiFi. 'Ensure that you are not connected to any other networks'. If you're using your phone to set up the connection, turn mobile data off. The WiFi network name (SSID) and password/key are on the data sheet included with your router.
Router setup
Getting connected is easy and only takes 3 steps. The general procedure is explained below. For info and tips specific to your router, see the following links:
Setup instructions for Tenda routers
setup instructions for Huawei routers
Log in to your router's configuration page
Open your browser, enter your router's IP address in the address bar, and press enter. The IP address is usually printed on a sticker on the underside of the router. The address will look something like https://192.168.0.1/
You will be presented with a login screen. If your router has not been preconfigured, you'll be asked to create a password. Be sure to use a secure password.
If your router has been preconfigured, check the datasheet provided with the device.
Some routers may have a default username and password set. If you're not sure which details to use, try admin as the username and password, or give us a call on tel:086-111-1101.
Connection settings
Once you're logged in to your routers configuration page, find the section for "Internet", "connection settings" or similar.
- Set the connection type to PPPoE.
- Enter your fibre username and password.
- Click Save or Connect.
