WHAT IS HOSTING AND HOW DOES IT WORK ?
Hosting' is a service provided by a business which offers a physical location for the storage of web pages and files and data. Think of a Web Hosting Company as a mall where physical space is rented out on servers allowing webpages to be viewed on the Internet.
Some of the terminology is difficult to understand during your first hosting experience so here are some explanations to help you along.
Most companies which provide web hosting services have web servers. A Web server includes the hardware, operating system, server software, TCP/IP protocols and the Web site content. Web servers process requests from Browsers for web pages. There are then displayed in a format we can see online.
An IP address might be something you have encountered before. Every computer connected to the Internet must have a unique address known as an IP (Internet Protocol) address. It is usually a list of numbers separated by dots. The address provides a unique identification of a computer and also uniquely points to the network it belongs to.
What is an URL. This is short for Uniform Resource Locator This is the world wide accepted address for documents and other resources on the internet. The first part of the address tells the web what protocol to use, and the second part specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. So all the specifications are there in the window you type into at the top of your search engine.
If you use hosting to have a website , you will probably encounter the term FTP access. What does this stand for ? File Transfer Protocol (FTP) does just what it says. It helps to transfer one or more files from one computer to another across the Internet. Usually from a personal computer to a Server maybe in reverse.
Everyone talks about uploading and downloading but it's a little confusing at first. Uploading means that you are transferring files or information from your computer to another remote one, usually a server.
Downloading is the opposite when files are coming from that server to your computer.
So, that's a beginning and good luck with your hosting experiences. Remember we have several packages to suit your needs !!
